Our Cognitive Assessments:
At Melbourne IQ, we administer cognitive assessments that are suitable for children between the ages of 3 - 16 years.
We specialise in providing two types of cognitive assessment:
1) for diagnosing intellectual giftedness, and
2) for understanding and supporting a child's cognitive or learning difficulties.

Our cognitive assessments are conducted in a friendly, caring, and respectful manner. We aim to see your child's 'best', and understand that many factors need to fall into place for this to happen. We allow your child to set the pace, to take breaks regularly for snacks and play, and to dictate how formal or informal testing needs to be in order to see their 'best'.
At Melbourne IQ, all of our Cognitive Assessments include:
-
A 3-hour in-person consultation, with:
-
A brief parent interview to review medical & developmental history
-
Delivery of a child cognitive (IQ) test (e.g., WPPSI-IV, WISC-V or WNV)

Our Tests
At Melbourne IQ only the most up-to-date, gold standard cognitive tests are used.
Depending on the age of your child, these tests may involve playing with blocks, completing puzzles, drawing on paper and answering questions that test their general knowledge.
All of our tests take approximately 1-2 hours to administer, and are selected for your child based on: their age, abilities and the reason for their cognitive assessment.
Wechsler Primary and Preschool Scales of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)
For ages 3 – 7 years
The WPPSI-IV is a test of your child’s general intellectual functioning – suited to children aged 3 - 7 years. This assessment allows us to compare your child’s cognitive abilities with those of their same-aged peers, across five key domains: verbal comprehension, visual spatial abilities, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. We can also derive an IQ score for your child based on this test.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V)
For ages 6 – 16 years
The WISC-V is a test of your child’s general intellectual functioning – suited to children aged 6 – 16 years. This assessment allows us to compare your child’s cognitive abilities with those of their same-aged peers, across five key domains: verbal comprehension, visual spatial abilities, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. We can also derive an IQ score for your child based on this test.
Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV)
For ages 4 - 16 years
The WNV is a test of your child's general intellectual functioning that is specially designed for children aged 4- 16 years who are non-verbal, hard of hearing or culturally diverse. This assessment allows us to compare your child's cognitive abilities with those of their same-aged peers, without the use of verbal instructions, or a verbal response. We can also derive an IQ score for your child based on this test.
Our Fees
An all-inclusive fee is stated for our cognitive assessments (i.e., $1,650 for 'Giftedness' assessments, and $1,850 for 'Cognitive or Learning Difficulties' assessments). This fee covers our fully-qualified, child psychologist's time spent: preparing for your child's appointment, completing an initial interview with you to review medical and developmental history, delivering the cognitive test to your child (of varying duration; ranging from 1 - 2 hours), scoring and interpreting your child's results, preparing a formal written report, and completing a follow-up appointment with you to review & discuss your child's assessment results.

Cognitive assessments are unfortunately NOT subsidised by Medicare. This means that we (as well as any other psychologists) are unable to provide you with a rebate for the cost of these services.

If you have private health insurance with extras cover, and your package includes Psychology services, a rebate (covering a small portion of the assessment costs) may be provided to you by your private health care fund. If you are intending to claim a rebate for your assessment through your private health insurance, please let us know via email prior to your assessment date.

NDIS recipients may be able to use NDIS funds to cover the cost of a cognitive assessment - however this will depend on the way their funds are managed, and whether an assessment is part of their plan. Please get in touch with us via email (info@melbourneiq.com.au) if you are interested in using NDIS funds to pay for your assessment.

Please note: You do not need to seek a referral from a GP or medical professional for this appointment.
